Hugo Broos Calls For Overseas Friendlies

Hugo Broos has urged the South African Football Association (SAFA) to secure high-profile friendlies against European or Asian giants for the June international break.

The request follows a challenging two-match series against Panama, which saw South Africa draw 1-1 in Durban, KwaZulu Natal, before suffering a 2-1 defeat in Cape Town, Western Cape, on Tuesday, 31 March.

The 73-year-old South Africa coach emphasised that broadening the team’s exposure is critical for their 2026 FIFA World Cup preparations. Having been drawn in a group with South Korea, Broos believes facing technically disciplined Asian opposition is the only way to replicate the intensity his side will face in the tournament.

Additionally, potential matchups against European teams would prepare Bafana Bafana for a possible clash with the winner of the Czech Republic vs. Denmark playoff.

Despite the recent loss to Panama, the Belgian tactician remains optimistic, noting the games allowed him to experiment with tactical setups and assess squad depth. He also confirmed that veteran playmaker Themba Zwane has secured his World Cup spot, provided he remains fit.

As the June window approaches, Broos has insisted in recent interviews that SAFA must deliver elite opponents: “There has to be another friendly.”

Bafana Bafana look ready to settle on a squad ahead of their opening World Cup match against tournament co-hosts Mexico on 11 June.
